Advisory Board Member
Selina Sheikh
Selina is the Founder of MAAM (Muslim Autism and ADHD Mothers) which supports SEND families
nationally with a majority of families based in East London. MAAM has supported hundreds of families over 6 years providing advice, emotional support, advocacy and signposting. For the most vulnerable of family’s advocacy is offered in multidisciplinary meetings, annual reviews and for EHCP assessments. MAAM can also be accessed via Newham’s Local Offer of support groups. Over the years MAAM has tackled cultural perceptions of autism, mental health issues and education frameworks outside of mainstream provision enabling families to explore options such as ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis). MAAM has been successful in empowering its users in being proactive to support one another and using their experiences to help identify tried and tested professionals such as OT’s, SLT’s, EP’s and ABA Therapists.
Selina is also the Founders Associate of S.E.N.Station organising local support for families for SEND exclusive sessions such as jump sessions, splash park, soft play, information/professional workshops, coffee mornings (which includes a drop in advice surgery) and annual events. S.E.N.Station has allowed families to build their own special community based on shared experiences, sibling carer befriending and most importantly; no judgement. We provide a safe space for families to discuss their struggles and help buddy up families in the community.
Previously Selina has experience in both the public sector and the charity and voluntary sector with a special focus on BAME communities. Selina has project managed services in forced marriage and domestic violence, women’s refuges, community resettlement, carers respite, domiciliary care, community fire safety and multidisciplinary projects with the Fire Service.
Selina trained as a Nursery Nurse (Early Years Practitioner) during her gap years between college and university so was able to identify early on, signs of autism in her second child. A mother of three, Selina is also active as an Executive Chair of the PTA of an independent Islamic School in East London.
